Thanos is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-artist Jim Starlin, the character made his debut in 'The Invincible Iron Man' #55 (1973). Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe and has clashed with numerous superheroes including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the X-Men, among others. He's driven by his desire to obtain the Infinity Stones, six immensely powerful gems that, when combined, give their wielder god-like powers. The character's quest for the stones and his desire to wipe out half of all life in the universe to 'balance' it became central to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 'Infinity Saga'.
